Former President of the United States James “Jimmy” Carter turns one hundred years old today. Carter, who represented the Democratic Party, served as president for one term, from 1977 to 1981. Carter is the oldest living US president.
As president, Carter pursued a policy of peace and reconciliation, which resulted in, among other things, the Israel-Egypt peace agreement. After his presidency, Carter had a decades-long career as a defender of human rights and peace, for which he was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Carter has been in hospice care at home since early last year.
