A 100 year old horror legend returns in the trailer for Nosferatu

Vampire films are a dime a dozen, but Nosferatu is still special. The Dracula relative was in… first vampire classic in cinema history born and so far only touched by absolute master directors.

Now The Witch and The Northman maker Robert Eggers turns to the bloodsucker: A new trailer was released today for Nosferatu – The Undead.

It villain Bill Skarsgård follows in terrible footsteps

Robert Eggers’ new film is drawing some major comparisons before it’s even been released. On the one hand there is the original, Nosferatu, a symphony of horror from 1922. Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s silent film is considered one of the most important horror films of all time – with Max Schreck in the lead role as the iconic villain (who even had his own film made about him, Shadow of the Vampire). Then Werner Herzog also took on the material with Nosferatu – Phantom of the Night and cast Klaus Kinski in the bloodsucker role. Not to mention the numerous related Dracula films…

Now it villain Bill Skarsgård will follow in the footsteps of Schreck and Kinski to stretch out his undead fingers as Count Orlok to the young Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), while her husband Thomas (Nicholas Hoult) falls under his spell.

Nosferatu will be the first horror shocker of the new year

The other cast includes Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and around 2,000 real rats, Eggers revealed. Cameraman Jarin Blaschke, with whom Eggers already designed the black and white worlds of The Lighthouse and most recently the Viking horror of The Northman, is once again responsible for the dark image compositions.

If you don’t feel cold enough in winter, you can look forward to: Nosferatu – The Undead starts on January 2, 2025 in German cinemas.
