NRK: Norway is considering building a fence on the border with Russia | News in brief

Norway and Russia have almost 200 kilometers of common land border.

The Norwegian government is considering building a fence on its border with Russia, the Norwegian Broadcasting Company reported NRK on saturday night.

– It is a measure that can become relevant either for the entire border or for some parts, Norway’s Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl quoth.

According to NRK, the Minister of Justice has received inspiration for the fence from Finland, whose border with Russia is currently under construction with a barrier fence about 200 kilometers long.

– Border fences are very interesting, not only because of the deterrent effect, but because they contain sensors and technology that can be used to detect people moving near the border, Enger Mehl comments.

Norway and Russia have almost 200 kilometers of common land border.

The Finnish Border Guard will build a total of 200 kilometers of fixed barrier on Finland’s eastern border by the end of 2026. Initially, around 70 kilometers of fence will be built at international border crossings and their sites.

Finland’s eastern border is approximately 1,300 kilometers long.
