Party leader of the Sweden Democrats Jimmie Åkesson married his now new wife on Saturday Matilda Kärnerup in Slottslängorna in Sölvesborg.
In this week’s episode of News24 podcast Flödet, there has been discussion about the party leader’s bachelor party, the wedding’s festival theme and the fact that no speeches were welcome, only karaoke singing.
But on Saturday, it wasn’t just love that was in focus, but also the surprising menu.
Rather than a classic three-course dinner, the newlyweds had chosen to hire one of Sölvesborg’s local food trucks to satiate their guests. The wedding guests were treated to an unexpected mix of churros, nacho plates and filled baguettes.

According to The Express it turned out that the menu was a mix of simpler dishes such as churros, taco wraps, crispy chicken with fries and baguettes filled with, among other things, chanterelle cheese and chicken.
But it wasn’t just the food that got attention – the drink choices also caused a lot of head shaking, not least from wine experts.

“Fatal” wine choice
For the sandwiches and natcho plates, there was also a free bar. The drinks menu included Norrlands Guld, Famous Grouse whiskey and a range of different wines that might make most wine experts raise their eyebrows.
One of the more critical voices was Sune Liljevallwine expert and long-time jury member in the Winemaker of the Year competition, who did not hesitate to call the choice of wines “fatal”. On the tables were bottles from Tre Apor, Chill Out and Black Tower – low-cost wines that Liljevall believes could have been replaced with better alternatives for only a couple of tens more.
– Either Jimmie Åkesson or the bride-to-be have incredibly bad taste or they have chosen the cheapest possible wines, he said in an interview with Expressen.
Among the various wines, it was the Black Tower Fruity White that received the sharpest criticism. Liljevall described it as “oversweetened, bland and really nasty”. A relic from a time when “lousy German wines dominated the market”, as he put it.
Liljevall summed up the selection of wines as “public-facing wines without character”, saying he himself would be surprised if he encountered the same wines at a wedding.
– I wouldn’t argue, but I would probably ask if there isn’t a beer instead, he commented to the newspaper.

The free bar took its toll
The open bar, stocked with both wine and spirits, also proved a challenge for at least one of the guests. Just before 9 p.m., a slightly over-refreshed party-goer was seen stumbling away towards Jimmie Åkesson’s Säpo car. After a short breather behind the big Volvo, the guest was able to recover enough to return to the party.
Despite the odd elements of the menu and the questionable quality of the wine selection, the wedding reception seems to have been an evening full of both joy and unexpected highlights. The bride and groom had previously said that they did not want the guests to make any speeches during the party, but singing karaoke was welcome. Liljevall states that the wine may have been an aid for this.
– It can work if they are to be sipped, so that you dare to sing karaoke. But they are not too interested in wine, he told the newspaper.
