Several powerful explosions have been heard in southern Beirut, several news agencies state.
The Israeli military confirms that it attacked Hezbollah’s headquarters.
Now black, thick smoke rises from the city.
According to witness statements and images on social media, large clouds of black smoke are now rising from Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. The explosions were said to have been so powerful that they were felt 30 kilometers north of Beirut.
The Israeli military, the IDF, confirms the attacks themselves.
“The IDF has carried out a precise attack on the central headquarters of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Dahiyeh,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a statement.
The military describes the headquarters as the “epicenter of Hezbollah’s terror,” according to a statement on Telegram.
A source with access to Hezbollah told AFP that at least six buildings had been razed to the ground.
Netanyahu: Will continue to “humiliate” Hezbollah
The attack came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave his speech at the United Nations in which he promised to “continue to humiliate Hezbollah.”
Earlier on Friday, both Israel and Lebanon are said to have carried out attacks against each other. Among other things, Israel stated that Hezbollah fired ten rockets at the Israeli city of Tiberias. On the other hand, Lebanon says that a family of nine has died in an Israeli attack on a Lebanese border village.
In total, more than 700 people have been killed since Israel stepped up its attacks on Lebanon earlier this week, according to local reports.
Footnote: SVT previously stated that the Iranian embassy in Beirut was attacked, something they are now backing away from.
