Football: Örgryte icon Sören Börjesson dead – turned 68: “Completely unique person”

The legend passed away the night before Thursday and just before lunch today the club received the news.

– The family informed us. So this is very new. Everyone at Öisgården is deeply affected. It feels unreal and it is a great sadness, says chairman Terje Johansson to Göteborgs-Posten.

Börjesson came to Örgryte in the 1970s and is considered one of the club’s greatest ever.

“It is with sadness in the heart that Öis Fotboll is forced to announce today that one of the greatest in the history of the Society fell asleep last night,” the club writes on social media.

Was team captain in the gold team in 1985

When the team became Swedish champions in 1985, their first SM gold since 1928, Börjesson was team captain. In the same season, he also finished tied for first in the Allsvenskan shooting league with ten complete hits.

– He is a completely unique person in Öi’s history. There is no one who has served longer for the association than Sören. It was he who raised the bar in 1985 and he was still at Öisgården until he passed away. So this is something that really touches, says Terje Johansson.

Sören Börjesson also made five A international matches for the Swedish national team.

After his playing career, he has had various roles in Örgryte, including as head coach for shorter periods.

Örgryte writes on social media that they will honor Börjesson in connection with Saturday’s home match in the super league against Varberg.

Sören Börjesson was 68 years old.
