City councilors have approved plans to complete some overdue repairs at Brantford Municipal Airport.

Councilors voted in favor of spending $135,000 to fill the cracks in the airport’s taxiways and runways. Taxiways connect to runways from hangars and other airport facilities.

The money for the repairs will come from the city’s airport reserve fund.

“Unfortunately, we got behind on filling these cracks and we need this extra money to catch up,” Coun. Greg Martin said at a city council meeting Tuesday. “Some of the cracks were wider and deeper than expected and the traditional way of crack sealing won’t work so we need to use different material.”

Councilors also approved plans to demolish the vacant former records building at the airport.

Martin said the demolition will enable airport officials to move forward on plans to add badly needed commercial hangars to the airport.

City council in August voted to add more T-hangars to the airport to meet a growing demand caused by the closure of some regional airports and a change of focus at others.

Councilors voted on Tuesday to set aside $81,000 for the demolition but Martin said the actual cost might be lower.

Airport officials have been speaking with representatives of Conestoga College who may be interested in demolishing the building as part of a learning exercise for students enrolled in the college’s heavy equipment program.

The college’s heavy equipment program is delivered at the airport.

Prior to Tuesday’s decision, there was $740,000 in the airport reserve fund.
