The El-Volvon crashed out of the fourth floor of the Sandvika shopping center’s parking garage.

The man driving died.

Norwegian police are now investigating whether the accident may have been caused by technical faults in the car.

With its 190 stores, the Sandvika storsenter shopping center outside Oslo is one of Scandinavia’s largest. On Monday, a man in his 60s crashed through a wall in the shopping center’s parking garage and fell four stories.

The man’s life could not be saved, reports VG.

– Many have witnessed the accident, the violent scenes and a violent event, says Sandvika storsenter manager Kathrine Ingerø to VG.

The accident vehicle was an electric Volvo of a 2022 model affected by a recall due to the vehicle starting to accelerate without pressing the gas pedal, states VG.

In May 2022 reported WeCar owners that Volvo recalled nearly 20,000 vehicles of the XC40 Recharge model. The problem then was that the car could speed up without warning or stop suddenly.

– We carry out a broad investigation and the technical condition of the car is that of the parts. We cannot come to any conclusions before the technical investigation is complete, but it still cannot be ruled out, says prosecutor Katrine Eilertsen to VG.

According to VG, it is unknown if the accident car was one of the cars affected by the recall, but that it is part of the police’s investigation. The investigators state that they are in contact with the car manufacturer.

– Out of consideration for the ongoing investigation and the next of kin, we currently do not want to comment on the accident so as not to contribute to further speculation, says Erik Trosby, head of communications at Volvo Norway, to VG.
