For five years, Ubisoft titles were only available on the Epic Games Store and not on Steam. Now Ubisoft has announced that they want to be back in Valve’s range from day 1 with the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in February 2025. One of the reasons for this could be the poor performance of Star Wars Outlaws.
In 2019, Ubisoft switched from Steam to the Epic Games Store and turned its back on Steam. In the process, they released their game The Division 2 exclusively on the Epic Games Store for a certain period of time. Ubisoft was so pleased with the result that it extended its partnership with Epic.
After that, Ubisoft titles came on consoles and only in the Epic Games Store. The reason: While Steam takes a 30 percent share of sales, Epic Games only has to pay around 12 percent.
Future Ubisoft games will again be released directly on Steam
Ubisoft has announced that it will simultaneously release Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the Valve store and will do the same with its future games.
Why is Ubisoft returning to Valve? At the end of 2022, a lot changed, as a few Ubisoft titles came back to Steam. Two years after its release, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla appeared in the Valve store. This was followed by Far Cry 6 and Rainbow Six Extraction.
They also confirmed that the sales of Star Wars Outlaws were not what they had hoped for. The game maker released a transcribed conference that the release of Star Wars Outlaws was weaker than they had initially hoped.
The game manufacturer did not publish exact figures. However, the suspicion had been around for some time when Ubisoft shares fell by 13.5 percent shortly after the release of the Star Wars title.
Star Wars Outlaws will be available on Steam earlier than expected, on November 21, 2024. It is reasonable to assume that the game’s mediocre success is to blame for this.
At the beginning of 2024, Ubisoft released their alleged “AAAA” title, one level higher than a conventional AAA title. However, the game Skull & Bones was so poorly received by players that 3 months after its release, Ubisoft’s big “AAAA title” could be played for free.
