Diablo 4: “Ah, good old Diablo 2”

The hardcore mode in Diablo 4 punishes you for every mistake. This is what a player who blindly trusted someone found out. A nasty trick from earlier cost him his character and with it many hours of gameplay.

What is hardcore all about?

This is what happened to the player: On Reddit, user EfficientChair4487 posted a clip in which he steps through another player’s portal. Without really paying attention to where exactly he comes out, he activates the portal.

After a short loading screen, he finds himself in the Fields of Hatred, the open PvP zone of Diablo 4. There he is immediately greeted by a wizard who covers him with walls of fire and kills him within a second.

What’s particularly nasty is that the character was already at level 93. So a lot of hours went into it and especially on hardcore it’s harder to even reach high levels.

Within a few hours, the post had garnered over 600 comments. However, the user received little sympathy – the Diablo community is very used to such scenes from the past.

The players write: Diablo 2 already had the “TPPK”, short for: Town Portal Player Kill. Someone invites a fellow player and opens a portal to a zone where the other player dies immediately, usually just for the fun of griefing.

“That’s just part of hardcore”

In the comments, users ask themselves why you should even play hardcore with this in mind. The answer from the more experienced players: Because it’s part of it.

The user who has just lost his character here can learn from it and certainly won’t make this mistake again. In general, you shouldn’t blindly trust anyone in hardcore mode that you’ve never seen before.

In softcore, you just turn off your brain and slaughter demons without a plan […] In hardcore, you’re always in the thick of things and you have to pay attention to the monsters and what they’re doing. The choice of equipment and defenses is much more important. It brings another dimension to the game and it’s very enjoyable.

However, the majority of players seem to want exactly that from Diablo: to beat up demons without having to think about it. After a long day at work, this is “exactly the right kind of self-care”. For some, however, the mode is simply a great challenge: Experts go into a dungeon for level 50 at level 1, are not allowed to die, and even manage to
