He was signed to HV71 before the season and was seen by many as a good addition.
But already in the premiere, defender John Nyberg was poked – and immediately there were rumors of a move.
– I want to play every game, regardless of where you play, the player tells Hockey Sweden.
When the Jönköping club picked 28-year-olds John Nygren from rival Linköping on a three-year contract, many probably thought he would go straight into the team and get the chance straight away. After all, he has played SHL hockey in Frölunda, Brynäs and Linköping, as well as made an attempt in North America. This is no baby pigeon we are talking about. But in the premiere against Växjö, Nygren was missing from the squad.
Nyberg: “Of course not fun”
The back star had not even accompanied the squad to Växjö but was still in Jönköping. It was not due to any injury, but he was poked short and sweet. A decision that surprised many. In the second round, however, he was in the team after Oliver Kaski got injured and a place opened up for Nyberg.
– Of course it’s not fun not playing… But now that you got to play your first match, you just have to think that you want to get into it and play easily. It’s about taking it step by step or change by change and not thinking too much about what has happened or thinking about the future. But just be in the moment all the time. That was my mindset before the match, he tells Hockey Sweden.

The fact that he was previously judged to be too bad to be among the seven backs in the premiere has of course taken a toll on him. It wasn’t quite the start he had wanted at his new club.
– No, of course not. I want to play every game, no matter where you play. But it’s nothing that you can walk around and think about too much. You have to look ahead and, as I say, just take it day by day and do it as well as possible, he says.
Dealing with the move rumours
Right after the tease in the premiere, a rumor began to abound that HV71 would be ready to release John Nyberg right away. The Express wrote that the club was willing to let him go to another club if he agreed to it himself. Although his contract only expires in 2027, an early exit could be relevant.
But John Nyberg has no plans to leave HV71. Nor has he heard anything about any such rumours. Nor has he received any indication from the club that they would like to get rid of him.
– No, not really. I don’t know what… I haven’t seen or heard anything about it. As I’ve said ten times now, I just focus on taking it day by day and game by game. I try to do as well as possible and play better. No, I have not heard anything about such a thing, he says.

This is what you call a nightmare start at a new club. Hope it works out for John Nyberg in HV71. The season is long and players will break, you need a big squad.
