Wolf expert Maurice la Haye of the Mammal Society calls the lowering of the protection status ‘pure symbolic politics’. According to La Haye, people are now saying that the protection status is going down, but it is not made clear what that means. “Faster shooting, more disruption?”, he asks. “The question is always: what is the problem? Nuisance? Are there too many dead animals, too many wolves? A judge will always look at what is the most appropriate means to prevent nuisance. So a first step seems to have been taken, but it raises more questions than it answers.”
