Flags at the county administration building in Simcoe have been lowered to half-mast to honor the life of former Norfolk educator, councilor, and dynamic community supporter, Betty Chanyi, who died over the weekend.

“Former Coun. Chanyi dedicated many years to serving Norfolk County in various capacities,” said a news release issued on Tuesday by Norfolk County. “She was an esteemed elementary school educator, a committed community volunteer, and a respected member of Norfolk council, representing Ward 1 from 2010 to 2014.
“Norfolk extends sincere condolences to her family, friends, and everyone who knew her. Betty’s legacy of dedication and service will be remembered and cherished by the entire community.”
Chanyi died at Sakura House Hospice in Woodstock, with her daughter, Lisa Chanyi-Baruth, at her side, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, said an obituary notice. She was 78.
Chanyi began her teaching career at the age of 19 after attending London Teacher’s College.

She taught elementary school before serving as vice-principal and later principal at schools in Norfolk County.
A nature lover, Chanyi spent time at Birds Canada “working to increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of birds” across the country, said her obituary.
She was involved in many community groups including the Norfolk Family Health Team, Port Rowan/South Walsingham Heritage Association, Backus Museum committee, Norfolk Field Naturalists, Long Point Basin Land Trust and the Port Rowan Farmers’ Market.
Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin called Chanyi a role model.
“Betty was a remarkable woman who dedicated many years of her life to public service, education, and volunteerism,” said Martin. “Her unwavering commitment and contributions have significantly enriched our community. As a trailblazer for women in politics, Betty was an inspiring role model.”
Visitors will be received in the Jeffrey W. Glendinning Funeral Home, 36 Front Rd. Port Rowan on Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm A service will be conducted from the Clark Chapel of the funeral home on Saturday at 11 am Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Port Rowan.
