(Telestock) – “2026 is the date of the review clause set in EU legislation” on the mandatory target of placing only zero-emission cars on the EU market by 2035, “and I think it’s the right time, for now”, the European Commission’s spokesperson for Climate Action and Energy, Tim McPhie, confirmed this today in Brussels.
Asked by journalists whether it is possible, as Italy and other countries are requesting, to bring forward the review of the EU regulation in question by one year, McPhie responded during the daily press briefing: “We adopted the legislation on the 2035 target for zero-emission vehicles just over a year ago. This legislation includes a final review, which will take place in 2026, to give the legislation time to settle, so to speak, to see the state of the market, and then review all the tools needed to ensure that we achieve these goals by 2035.”
McPhie then recalled that the re-elected president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen “has underlined in her political guidelines” for the next mandate “that she will use the opportunity of the review clause to propose a targeted amendment, specifically to address the issue of E-fuels (synthetic fuels, ed.) in the future, and that is all I can say for the moment. The rest is pure speculation”. Asked whether another Commission proposal is not necessary to amend legislation that has already been approved, the spokesperson replied: “Yes, the Commission has the right of legislative initiative; theoretically speaking, amending any legislative act must be decided with the co-legislators.”
