The Tara canyon is quite simply the deepest in Europe. Its dizzying cliffs reach 1,300 meters in height in places, overlooking a river with crystal clear, turquoise waters that winds for 150 kilometers. The wild beauty of the place takes your breath away. Pine forests as far as the eye can see, waterfalls cascading down from the mountains to flow into the river, the place seems to come from another world.
For the more adventurous, the best way to discover the Tara Gorges is undoubtedly to dive into them! The landscapes pass by, majestic and preserved. Whether rafting or canoeing, going down this river is a unique experience, with its share of thrills when you have to paddle between the rocks and cross rapids and waterfalls. It is also better to find out beforehand and call on a local guide. You can also fly over the canyon, suspended from a zip line more than 150 meters above the ground. A breathtaking crossing, even for the bravest who cannot escape vertigo when faced with the immensity of the gorges beneath their feet.
The Tara is not just a playground for extreme sports enthusiasts. It is also the largest reserve of drinking water in Europe. Its pure and preserved waters are a precious resource, which some would like to exploit by building a hydroelectric dam. The project is contested, environmental defenders are fighting against this project which would jeopardize the beauty of the place and the tourism that is developing.

While it was almost unknown 10 years ago, boats of all nationalities are now multiplying on the river, while remaining far from the crowds of the American Grand Canyon or even our famous Verdon Gorges. The Tara Canyon is located in the northwest of Montenegro, on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The nearest airport is Podgorica, the country’s capital, accessible directly from Paris by flights that take between 2h30 and 3h. You can also land in Dubrovnik in Croatia and reach the canyon in 3 hours by car.
