The number “Pi” plays Pokémon and if it ever leaves the starting city, it will destroy pretty much everything in its path

The number “Pi” has been trying out the game Pokémon Sapphire for three years now. What is the current state of progress?

What kind of experiment is this? Since the end of 2021, you can follow a mathematical experiment on the YouTube channel “WinningSequence”. There, each digit between 0 and 9 was assigned a button.

Now the sequence of digits of the number “Pi” runs through there, which is considered infinite. The thought: Somewhere in this jumble of numbers there could be a sequence of numbers that would lead to the number “Pi” being able to complete “Pokémon Sapphire”. A “winning sequence”, in other words. In theory, at least.

Last year, a good 16,000 hours had already been invested in the experiment. What does it look like today, 10 months later?

Pi loves the first city, escapes from fights, chills in the menu

This is how good Pi is in Pokémon: As things stand, the number hasn’t really gotten much further than it did back then. Pi is still haunting the game’s first city, Roothome. Yes, every now and then the trainer makes it to the gates of the city and fights a few monsters, escapes from some fights, wins others – but Pi hasn’t really gotten very far yet.

Again and again, short excursions into the rest of the game are interrupted by a return almost immediately. Pi goes into buildings, clicks into the menu again and again, and also checks the Pokédex more often, which is largely filled with empty entries.

You can see: Pi obviously doesn’t feel quite ready to embark on the journey towards the Pokémon Championship and would rather train a little more on home soil.

But that’s no longer necessary. If Pi ever leaves this first city to become a Pokémon master, there’s probably not going to be anyone else who can match that number. At least with the first trainers, wild Pokémon and arenas, Pi will wipe the floor.

Incidentally, an AI that tried to create Pokémon Red had a similar experience.

This is the Pi team: After thousands of hours, Pi has assembled the following Pokémon team:

  • A Level 8 Fiffyen
  • A Level 2 Zigzag
  • A Level 9 Zigsachs
  • … and a Gewaldro at level 88
  • Yes, in the course of his training, Pi not only managed to evolve his starter Pokémon Treecko via Reptar into Sceptile, but also got it to level 88. Apparently, he had already come across a lot of beginner Pokémon outside the city gates, which Pi was able to use to train his Sceptile.

With this Pokémon, Pi should have little to no trouble until it eventually reaches the Pokémon League. This is assuming that over many hours Pi will also accumulate other Pokémon that he trains. It would of course be stupid if some unfortunate sequence of numbers caused Pi to release his Sceptile.

But: As things stand, it looks as if Pi is still feeling very comfortable in Rootham even after almost three years. We are excited to see if the number will increase at some point. Incidentally, this experiment is not the first unusual approach to playing Pokémon. A real classic of the “genre” is Twitch plays Pokémon – more about that here.
