Charlotte Baris: On the afternoon of May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, then head of the Jewish Agency, a Zionist organization, hurries to enter the Museum of Fine Arts in Tel Aviv. That day, the British mandate for Palestine is in its final hours: the partition of the region was voted on at the UN a few months earlier. Despite the request to keep the event secret, a large crowd has gathered around the museum. Inside, many guests are gathered. There are notably the 37 members of the Zionist General Council, representing the entire political spectrum. At 4 p.m., silence falls.
David Ben-Gurion delivers a speech in which he proclaims the independence of the State of Israel. The silence gives way to an explosion of joy. In the moments that follow, all the members of the council will sign the declaration of independence. Among these signatories, two women, including Golda Meir. David Ben-Gurion, who has become Prime Minister of the country, is cautious. And in the face of the difficulties that lie ahead, in particular the tensions with the Arab countries, he will rely heavily on this female politician, who has been committed for decades to a Zionist state. Years later, Golda Meir will become Prime Minister, and her role in the Yom Kippur War will be decisive in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
