The solar park is planned to be 400 kilometers long and have an average width of five kilometers. The project stretches along the Kubuqi Desert in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China.
In addition to producing green energy, the solar panels also protect China’s second longest river, the Yellow River, from sand blowing in and degrading water quality. In addition, the panels provide shade and shelter from the wind, allowing plants to grow beneath them.
But, for the countries of the EU, China’s big investments in green energy can cause that.
– The EU’s problem is that the competition from China becomes too great, because when you decide to invest in something with China’s government support, you can lower the prices so much that European companies are unable to match them. With the result that European producers are knocked out and we become completely dependent on Chinese-produced solar cells, says SVT’s Ulrika Bergsten, former Asia correspondent.
At the same time, new coal-fired power plants are also still being built, as China does not yet fully trust the stability of renewable energy.
