Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, a candidate for the left-wing coalition in austerity-driven Sri Lanka, has won the presidential election on Saturday, September 21, the country’s electoral commission announced the day after the vote. The 55-year-old former Marxist was declared the winner with 42.3% of the vote, ahead of opposition leader in parliament Sajith Premadasa (32.7%) and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe (17.2%).
