The moon gets company this fall. Archive image. Photo: Johan Nilsson/TT
Earth gets an extra moon this fall – at least temporarily.
Our planet’s gravity has caught a wayward asteroid, and the asteroid will orbit Earth for about two months, between September 29 and November 25.
The asteroid was discovered by astronomers on August 7 in one of Nasa’s space programs, writes CNN. The fact that it is “stuck” in the earth’s gravitational field is due to the fact that it traveled at a relatively low speed, which means that it is more affected by the earth’s force field.
The asteroid comes from the Arjuna asteroid belt that orbits the Sun, and is expected to return there when it has completed orbiting the Earth.
It is not the first time that Earth has been visited by “mini-moons” – it also happened in 1981 and 2022.

The perpetrator was not left at the crime scene, but after a search operation in the area, the police arrested a man in his 20s. He is suspected of aggravated assault.
