France and Germany are calling on the European Commission to negotiate a new migration agreement with Great Britain. Both countries want to strengthen the fight against illegal immigration and have therefore sent a joint letter to Brussels.

The new British Prime Minister has said he is ready to speed up the processing of asylum seekers’ applications and toughen the fight against people smugglers. Earlier this month, at least twelve migrants lost their lives off the coast of France while trying to reach the British coast.

Between January and June, more than 12,000 people crossed the Channel from France. A number that is up 17% compared to the same period last year.
The previous British government had struck a deal with Rwanda to deport asylum seekers there, a policy abandoned when Labour came to power last July.
