If the Netflix subscriber finds an answer, it will be in a season 2, if it ever sees the light of day.

Squid Game is a real hit on Netflix. The South Korean series features children’s games played violently, often resulting in death. It is so successful that many children have heard of Squid Game, which is banned for under-16s. In playgrounds, some people reenact certain events from the series, to the point of alarming the Ministry of National Education: on LCI, Jean-Michel Blanquer calls for everyone’s “responsibility” so that younger people do not watch the series. “It is obvious that the platforms are responsible (…), we have seen that it is normally banned for under-16s, perhaps we should consider measures that allow for real parental control on such subjects”.

As a reminder, however, parental controls do exist on the streaming platform, in the Account tab > Profile and parental controls > Access restrictions. Jean-Michel Blanquer also called for parental responsibility: “we will not achieve anything if we do not have a commitment from parents to check more closely what is happening,” he also said. “Do not leave children alone in front of screens.” School directors and college principals have been alerted to the phenomenon, and some parents have therefore been able to receive messages concerning this series.

In France, Squid Game is causing controversy in schools: children are reproducing the games from the Netflix series. This raises the question of the viewing age limit for this South Korean program. The streaming platform directly mentions on the Squid Game page that this content is reserved for people aged 16 and over, due to its violence. So, how can we prevent children and those under 16 from watching the series?

Outside of youth accounts, it is possible to set up parental controls on your Netflix account. Simply go to Account > Profile and parental controls > Access restrictions. You can then change the age category (content that does not meet the age limit will no longer be accessible) or target specific content that should not appear, such as Squid Game for example. Be careful, if you have several profiles that your children can visit, you should impose these restrictions on all profiles.
