Come back, Stefan Raab – but please leave TV Total in the past

Come back Stefan Raab – but please leave TV Total

If you look at the first episode of TV Total from 1999, then that was a completely different worldTelevision was extremely important and reality TV had only just become established. 25 years later, Stefan Raab is back. But what does Raab hope for from his comeback – or what do the viewers hope for?

TV-Total – with or without Stefan Raab – is no longer up to date

In the meantime, TV Total has grown in terms of its product range: not only television, but also video clips from social media are shown. Nonsense on TV has become nonsense from all over the world. And Stefan Raab has been replaced by Sebastian Pufpaff. But this new TV Total now wants to double ProSiebeneven if it is not yet clear what the second TV Total will look like in the end.

But how can a TV Total hold its own in times of TikTok and X, where video clips have a half-life of a day, sometimes even just a few hours? After a day or two, meme templates and TV clips are buzzing around on social media and are being commented on by all sorts of protagonists. Is there still a need for a TV-Totalthat summarizes something like this once a week?

Sebastian Pufpaff as TV Total presenter is not the problem

A late-night TV show like TV Total lives from its presenter. There are voices that claim that TV Total has lost its shine with the departure of Stefan Raab – but that is not the case. Sebastian Pufpaff is likeable and can convey Raab’s style – even if not quite as biting – with his own profile. The problem is the format.

Stefan Raab was always at his strongest when he stepped out of his everyday role as an entertainer: whether as producer of the German entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, as one of the presenters of the 2013 TV duel or as host of numerous unorthodox sporting events. But with Du gewinnst hier nicht die Million bei Stefan Raab he is starting a weekly entertaining quiz show – a step in the right direction for now.

Stefan Raab doesn’t need a second TV Total

But RTL and Raab should not make the mistake of creating a TV Total clonejust to outdo ProSieben – they have already done that with Raab’s TV comeback. Raab should once again organize big TV events like the boxing match against Regina Halmich and not chase after his TV Total past.

And as for Pufpaff: He should be the “new” Really reinvent TV-Total and leave the traditional TV format behind. If TV Total really changes completely, there is a danger that TV Total will only serve as an empty phrase for a completely different TV show. So the only option left is not to double TV Total, but to abolish it altogetherThat would be the best thing – for Raab’s legacy and for Pufpaff’s future.
