Garbage is piling up everywhere in the capital

In Congo, for the past five days, from the suburbs to the city center, the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, has been overflowing with garbage. The foul odors and impure air invade the city while the agents of the company responsible for collecting waste are on strike to demand unpaid bills.

Early this morning, around the small market of Massengo, north of the city, a herd of pigs is rummaging a pile of garbage under the disillusioned gaze of passers-by: ” I would say it is deplorable and quite sad with all the problems we have. [rareté de l’eau au robinet, coupures de courant, NDLR]. Seeing all these things again is destabilizing. I find that it is not good at all. Honestly, seeing such things in the 21st century is not normal and it is disturbing. » « It bothers us a lot. It’s not good to see such things. We are not well: there are mosquitoes and malaria everywhere. “, complain residents encountered in the street.

Streets choked with rubbish

Garbage bins are also overflowing along the city’s main arteries, which are narrowing in places. Waste is burned at all hours of the day and night, with no regard for the safety of residents. Lung diseases are due to all this garbage. The air we breathe is impure. So, the Congolese state must make efforts to stop all this “, laments one resident.

For five days, Averda company garbage collectors have stopped working because they have not received their salary for more than three months. The company, for its part, is still waiting for the amounts that should be allocated by the government.
