Identity theft scams are numerous and as if that wasn’t enough, TikTok is launching a feature to copy your voice.
Artificial intelligence is booming and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop. In an upcoming update, one of the world’s most famous apps announces the upcoming ability to copy voices and generate them again with artificial intelligence. TikTok wants to allow its users to further personalize the videos posted on its platform by adding a voice from any text.
This feature called “create your voice with AI” will be directly integrated into the TikTok application. It allows you to recreate your voice in the simplest way possible on audios of up to 15 seconds. The application even boasts of being able to easily recreate your voice or that of a loved one in less than 10 seconds. You then just have to type the text of your choice so that the application transforms it into an audio file that imitates both your tone, your timbre, but also your possible accent.
The benefit of such an option? Create short videos on TikTok more quickly for which you will no longer need to read a script or record your voice. All you have to do is enter a text so that the audio is associated directly with the video, effortlessly and without editing. TikTok specifies, however, that the audio recorded with this function remains private and stored on your device.
But there’s a catch: it can be easy to record someone else you know or a stranger without their knowledge by launching the app on your smartphone and hiding the screen. This would then allow you to “steal” a person’s voice without them even realizing it, in order to use it to create videos of your choice on the app.
It’s hard not to think about the various malicious uses that this feature could cause. The rise of scams with a voice created from scratch may not have escaped your attention in recent years with, until recently, a fake video of the late Alain Delon, who was promoting an online casino.
It is also difficult to protect yourself against this feature if it is used without your knowledge. However, if you happen to spot an audio or video usurping your identity, it is entirely possible to file a complaint online or at a police station. Specialized officers will then be able to take charge of removing the publication of the unwanted extract and questioning its possible authors.
