The impeachment process is unlikely to succeed, since it has little support. It could even have the opposite effect: strengthening Emmanuel Macron.
The procedure for the impeachment of the President of the Republic launched by La France Insoumise will be voted on in the National Assembly. “Great news” for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, he wrote on X. However, this procedure has very little chance of success. It could even have the opposite effect: strengthening the position ofEmmanuel Macron.
While the entire New Popular Front voted for the examination of the impeachment procedure – the first necessary step for it to be submitted to the votes of the deputies – not all are in favor of it. The Socialist Party has already committed to voting against it, thus going against its allies. Only the rebellious have indicated for the moment that they will vote in favor of the impeachment of the head of state, recalls Humanity.
A vote of legitimacy for the president?
However, the approval of three-quarters of the National Assembly is required for this process to succeed. We are therefore far from the mark, with only 71 deputies out of 570 in total. If, however, the procedure were to pass in the National Assembly, it would have to have the approval of three-quarters of the Senate. Note: the vote is by secret ballot. Benjamin Morel, lecturer in public law at the University of Paris-Panthéon-Assas, summarizes the motion of dismissal in an article by Public Senate : It is “easier to amend the Constitution to abolish the office of President of the Republic than to dismiss him.”
“This procedure which requires 2/3 of the votes in both assemblies will not succeed, everyone knows that,” reacts on X Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party. And added: “Ultimately, this rejection will offer the PR [président de la République, NDLR] a re-legitimization that he does not deserve.” While the decision by the National Assembly office to declare the impeachment motion admissible is a historic first, it may not prove sufficient to have a real political impact against Emmanuel Macron. Indeed, voting against the president’s impeachment could be tantamount to voting for him to remain in office. More than a vote of impeachment, the vote could become a real vote of confidence in the head of state.
