At least seven dead in wildfires in Portugal News

On Tuesday, a total of three rescuers died while fighting wildfires in the Coimbra area in the central parts of the country.

Seven people have already died in the wildfires plaguing Portugal since Saturday, the authorities say. In addition, around 50 people have been injured in the fires.

Three rescuers died in the Coimbra area in the central parts of the country during Tuesday’s firefighting operations. More than 4,500 rescuers participated in the extinguishing operations.

There were about 50 active wildfires in total, the largest of which were concentrated in the Aveiro region in the northern parts of the country.

The fires forced Portugal to close several roads and the country’s train connections. The country’s authorities have asked the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Rescue Services to help with the rescue work.
