The Covid-19 variant XEC, first seen in Germany in June, has begun to spread rapidly around the world. Experts had warned that the new variant could become even more effective as the weather gets colder, and that “it’s just beginning.” Speaking to Ekol TV, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan made statements about XEC.
Speaking about the XEC variant, Infectious Diseases Association President Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan stated that this is an omicron variant.
“THE SYMPTOMS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME”
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan’s statement about the Covid variant called XEC is as follows;
“There is no difference in terms of clinical picture. Findings and symptoms are all the same. The current variant is no different. These are Omicron variants. If the Omicron variant comes together with a variant such as delta or alpha and creates a new variant, it can be dangerous. It can progress with a very high mortality rate and transmission rate. This current variant, which is no different, cannot be understood by a citizen or a doctor.
“THERE IS NO REASON WHY IT SHOULD NOT BE IN TURKEY”
In the two-stage test, first, it should be tested whether it is Covid or not. In the second stage, if it is Covid, a variant analysis should be done there. Tests are almost never done in Turkey. When tests are not done, variant analysis is not done either. Therefore, the fact that no cases are reported in Turkey does not mean that there are no cases.
There is no reason why a variant detected in 27 countries should not be in Turkey. It is probably present in Turkey too, but the measures do not change much.
The measures are more important for risk groups such as those over 65 and those with chronic diseases.
These people should carry N95 masks and wear them in crowded environments.”
SPREADING RAPIDLY IN EUROPE
XEC has been detected in more than 500 samples from countries including Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Portugal and China. Analysts noted that the variant has become strongly prevalent in Denmark, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands.
