In WoW, there is a discussion about the race to see who will defeat the bosses in the raids first. One player wishes that the guilds would recognize that in the race for the world first, women and minorities could also play an important role as casters and as players. The opinionated Twitch streamer Asmongold becomes abusive and brushes off the backlash.
What does the player demand? On September 9, player “ActuallyArcane” wrote on Twitter about the race for the World First that is now starting in WoW:
One day I would love to see the Race to World First teams with a diverse group of Raiders.
Women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community can and do play WoW at high levels, and one day I would like to see the teams AND casters reflect that.
Asmongold attacks player on YouTube: She is the problem
This is what Asmongold said about it: For streamer Asmongold it is clear: The player who says this is not “actually arcane”, but “actually retarted”.
His anger at the player grows when he reads on her Twitter profile that she is a partner of Blizzard. He criticizes Blizzard for giving her more credibility.
We as consumers need to make it clear that such people do not speak for us. They speak only for themselves and no one else.
Asmongold seems to miss the irony that the statement implies that he himself speaks for “all consumers” and not just for himself.
Asmongold makes player the target of criticism in a video
This is how Asmongold treats the player: In a clip on YouTube, you can see that Asmongold doesn’t just address the player’s wish, but goes straight to the person behind the statement.
He then explains that “ActuallArcane” already attracted attention when she was happy about the corpulent model of the druid in Diablo 4. We reported on this in March 2023. She actually only called herself “fat”.
For him it is clear: the player is “the problem” – he is pleased that many in the comments also describe her as retarded.
Blizzard should be ashamed of supporting the player, she is a “parasite” and is embarrassing herself online.
Asmongold’s video sparked a series of negative comments against the player on YouTube. The video has now garnered 1 million views.
Asmongold is criticized for YouTuber’s statement on WoW
How does Asmongold react to criticism? A content creator, Pyromancer, took the player’s side on Twitter and criticized Asmongold. It is important to treat women with respect.
Asmongold felt that Pyromancer’s statements were an attack on him: “Someone is talking rubbish about him.”
The next video was quickly online on the YouTube channel Asmongold Clips – this time Pyromancer became the target of Asmongold’s anger.
He reacts aggressively to Pyromancer’s statement and argues that he was being lenient. If it had been a male player rather than a female player, he would have responded much more harshly.
Criticism disappears after Asmongold attacks critic
How did it continue? The video and the controversy with Pyromancer have since been deleted from YouTube. He has known Pyromancer for years and has no problem with him (via YouTube). When Pyromancer deleted his tweet, it was also okay that his own video disappeared from YouTube, explains Asmongold.
Nevertheless, he stands by his statements about “the girl”. However, his criticism of her has nothing to do with her as a person, but only with her statements.
It is definitely not the case that people are excluded from World First Racing because of their identity. Only “Karens” would say that. He finds such claims disgusting and terrible.
Pyromancer says: Tweet wasn’t from him – He doesn’t want any trouble
Why was the tweet deleted? Pyromancer says (via YouTube): He didn’t write the tweet, his editor did. Pyromancer himself wasn’t at home. When he came back, he saw that he had received a lot of dislikes and people had unsubscribed from him.
He said he was very frustrated because he was “getting in trouble for something he didn’t do.” He deleted the tweet.
Pyromancer says: He stands behind the statement in the tweet, but would not have directed it so clearly against Asmongold. He does not want to get involved in this “shit”, he just wants to make videos about WoW.
“Hasan, but for incels”
How is this discussed? In a Reddit thread about YouTube drama, people are now critical of Asmongold. The comments say:
Asmongold had criticized a Mexican streamer for winning the award for Streamer of the Year, while male US streamers were much more deserving. The streamer received hate mail and death threats and criticized Asmongold for stirring up hatred against her without knowing her: Twitch: 26-year-old is attacked for being the only woman nominated to win an award she didn’t want
