Is it worth buying a PS5 Pro in the US, where it costs 170 euros less?

In the USA, the PS5 Pro is supposedly much cheaper. But if you do the math on the prices, you’ll find that this isn’t true. MeinMMO has calculated what would happen if you bought a PS5 Pro in the USA.

How much does the PS5 cost? Sony had announced the official price and release date of the PS5 Pro in Germany:

  • The PS5 Pro will cost 799.99 euros in Germany.
  • For a drive you pay an additional 119.99 euros and for a stand around 30 euros. For a second DualSense controller you pay around 60 euros.
  • You pay around 950 euros for the complete package. A subscription to PS Plus is not included if you want to play online.

    • Some smart people have already figured out that 700 US dollars is the equivalent of 628.51 euros, which is much cheaper than ordering your PS5 Pro in Germany. But there are several catches.

    The price in the USA is lower because there are no taxes

    Why does the price feel lower in the USA? There is no uniform sales tax in the USA or in the individual states. However, it is usually much lower than our 19% in Germany: In California you pay 7.25%, in Colorado only 2.9%. This means that from a German perspective, prices in the USA are more or less exempt from sales tax.

    What happens during import? Anyone who has ever ordered a product in the USA knows that additional fees are added. When importing, you pay so-called import sales tax on your purchased product and customs duties.

    This is intended to prevent people from buying hardware or other products abroad at significantly lower prices, thereby putting them at a competitive disadvantage compared to companies.     How much does the PS5 Pro cost in the US? Let’s stick with our example of the equivalent of 628.51 euros that you would have to pay for the PS5 Pro in the USA. If you order now in the USA, you would have to consider several factors:

  • The general customs duties and additionally the import sales tax of 19%, since the value of the goods is more than 150 euros (via zoll.de)
  • In addition, there is usually a flat fee from the shipping service provider. Depending on the service provider (UPS, DPD, DHL), this can be between 10 and 15 euros. Unless you pick up your package directly from customs, in which case the fee is waived.
  • Depending on the seller in the USA, additional shipping costs for insured shipping may apply.

    • With import and customs, according to the customs calculator, you will pay 801 euros for international packages, not including the service provider’s flat rate and shipping costs. In the end, you will pay more for your PS5 Pro, which you supposedly bought cheaper in the USA, than in Germany.

    US products use other plugs

    Other risks: There are also other problems that you should be aware of:

  • Your package may get stuck at customs.
  • In Germany/EU, different warranty regulations apply than in the USA. If your device is broken, you cannot simply send it to the USA for repair.
