Germany’s Christian Democrats (CDU) opposition party announced on Tuesday that it has chosen its leader by Friedrich Merz as a chancellor candidate for next year’s parliamentary elections.
Germany is currently governed by an unpopular three-party coalition led by the chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The governing coalition includes Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). The coalition suffered losses earlier this year in the EU elections and the German state elections.
