Horses were largely out-competed as a means of transport by the automobile, and that a modern automobile is faster than a horse is quite self-evident.
If compared to slower vehicles on our roads, for example mopeds, it is not as obvious which is the fastest.
Here you get the answer to whether a moped is faster than a horse.
Moped cars are growing in popularity
Despite the fact that they are usually expensive, with price tags that are often well north of SEK 100,000, mopeds are becoming more and more common in our cities.
According to the end of 2023, there were just under 17,000 mopeds in Sweden Traffic analysis.

They are therefore seen as a more weather-protected and potentially safer alternative to a traditional moped.
The top speed for a moped is 45 kilometers per hour.

Is a horse faster than a moped?
When a horse runs, it is said to be galloping, and according to Horse Sweden a fast horse can gallop at between 60 and 70 kilometers per hour.
This means that the top speed of a horse of a faster average easily beats the top speed of a moped car.

On the other hand, the variation between different horses is probably greater than different mopeds, which pretty much all have the same top speed. The ability to maintain its top speed over a longer period of time is probably also greater with the moped than with the horse.
According to Hästsverige, a distance horse can maintain an average speed of 25 kilometers per hour over a distance of 16 miles.
