According to Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian, the purpose of the chastity police “was not to seek conflict with women”.
The new president of the theocratically run Iran Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday at his first press conference that he would make sure that the country’s chastity police no longer “harass” women.
– The purpose of the chastity police was not to seek conflict with women. I make sure they don’t bother (the women),” Pezeshkian said.
The president spoke about being held by the chastity police Mahsa Aminin on the second anniversary of the death. Amin’s death triggered months of unrest in which hundreds of people died.
Pezeshkian was chosen to have died in a helicopter crash in May Ebrahim Raisin successor in July.
Pezeshkian has been seen as a reformist leader who represents a different line than the ultra-conservative Raisi. He has promised, among other things, to relax restrictions on the internet and social media.
