Almost half a million people had already been evacuated from the storm’s path to safety in advance.
Tens of millions of people have taken shelter in Shanghai and elsewhere on China’s densely populated east coast from the path of Typhoon Bebinca.
The storm is the strongest typhoon to hit a city of one million since 1949. The storm’s winds have blown at their worst at 40 meters per second. They have felled trees and disrupted traffic.
For example, all flights have been canceled at two Shanghai airports. Train and ferry connections have also been interrupted.
According to the city authorities, 30,000 households have been without electricity.
The authorities moved 414,000 people from the storm to safety in advance. Kauping has tens of thousands of rescue and repair workers ready to respond to storm damage.
