NAME OF THE NEW CONCERN: XEC
A “more contagious” variant of the Covid virus, called XEC, is spreading more quickly in Europe and could soon become the dominant strain, scientists have warned.
“XEC IS TAKING CONTROL”
“It now looks like the XEC variant is a candidate to be the next dominant variant. XEC is definitely taking over,” Dr. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, said in a post on X on Sunday.
Researchers predicted in August that it could take several weeks to several months for this variant to emerge and spread more quickly.
“IT IS SPREADING QUITE FAST”
A sub-lineage of the Omikron variant, XEC, was first recorded in the German capital Berlin in June and is now spreading “fairly quickly” across Europe, North America and Asia, according to Covid data analyst Mike Honey.
SLOVENIA IN TROUBLE WITH XEC
Slovenia saw a high number of cases with this variant in August, with more than 10 percent of Covid-19 cases in the country belonging to the XEC variant.
