New gameplay for Crimson Desert inspires, but the main character triggers discussions

The new Gameplay trailer for Crimson Desert takes many players’ breath away and makes them excited. But there is one small downside: There is no character editor.

Does it have to be Jon Snow? The setting of Pearl Abyss’ new open-world adventure is beautiful, everyone agrees on that. It’s not just the graphics that delight many players, the battle scenes and even details like the depiction of the leaves (via YouTube) are convincing. But the game doesn’t offer you a character editor.

Instead, you play a protagonist who bears slight resemblance to the popular King of the North named Jon Snow from the successful TV series Game Of Thrones. The landscape in Crimson Desert and the western-inspired fantasy setting also remind GOT fans of their favorite series.

Pre-made character or character editor? Not everyone likes going into battle with a pre-made character, as this deprives them of the opportunity to get skins and create their own character. Here are a few example comments:

  • AttorneyDavis says (via Reddit): “I hope they let us choose which weapons we want to use, I’m not a sword and shield kind of guy. Hopefully we can turn off the massive spark effects too. Unfortunately there’s no character creation and the stealth attack looks pretty choppy, but they can still improve it.”
  • Upstairs-Ad244 says (via Reddit): “While it hasn’t been shared or announced yet, I’m curious if there will be hair and beard options for him. He’s cool as is, but a little more flair wouldn’t hurt, like we had with Geralt.”
  • Factboy12 writes sarcastically (via YouTube): “Crimson Desert: The Adventures of ‘You Know Nothing, Jon Snow.’”
  • The young man in the game is actually called Kliff and not Jon. In the latest gameplay video from IGN via YouTube, he roams through the world of Pywel and faces a number of challenges. The game will probably focus more on a good story, but the latest video also features exciting battles and idyllic landscapes.

How does MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz assess the restriction? The fact that you have to play the default character Kliff in Crimson Desert is a missed opportunity. After all, Pearl Abyss developed one of the most powerful and option-rich character editors in the MMORPG genre (and beyond) for Black Desert.

It would have been great if the new game from the Black Desert makers had allowed players to spend hours being creative when creating characters, or if there had at least been the option of a female protagonist – as a compromise.

    The future of the game

What happens next? Crimson Desert will certainly have a lot to offer. The game is currently still in development, so it is difficult to say what we will get. But at least the graphics are already making fans’ hearts beat faster.

In general, players are very impressed with Crimson Desert. Unfortunately, the game does not have a release date yet, so we are still waiting. However, it is due to be released sometime in 2025.
