The Swedish Tax Agency sends out income tax returns to millions of Swedes every year. For many, it’s an annual highlight once it hits the letterbox.
Many hope to find out how much they will get back in tax refunds, while others instead receive less pleasing news in the form of the knowledge that back taxes must be paid.

Remaining tax to the Swedish Tax Agency? It applies to you
Residual tax is paid if you have a tax liability that arises when you simply paid too little preliminary tax during the income year.
During the year, the responsible authority, Tax Agencyout and informs and urges the Swedes about what applies and when the residual tax must be paid.
It differs depending on when you chose to submit your income tax return and then received the final tax notice back.
If you received your final tax notice in April 2024, your back tax would be paid to the Swedish Tax Agency on 12 July.
If you instead received the final tax notice in June 2024, the residual tax should be in the authority’s account on 12 September.
Other dates that apply are:

When September 12 is now reached, 650,000 Swedes will have had to have paid their remaining tax amounts to the authority.
Against the background of the large percentage who had a tax debt, and who should have paid by September 12 at the latest, the Kronofogden recently chose to issue a sharp call.
On their website, they explained what to do, when to do it, and what happens if you don’t follow the prompt.
“Don’t forget to pay your back taxes. Thursday, September 12 is an important date for you who have to pay back taxes – then the money should be in the Tax Agency’s account,” they wrote.
The reason for the information is that many people tend to miss paying the money and thus either get reminder fees issued or, in the worst case, get the debt registered with the Kronofogden.
“Many people miss the payment and thousands every year have their back taxes handed over to us at the Crown Bailiff – completely unnecessarily,” they wrote further.
If you have not paid your debt to the Tax Agency on time, a reminder will be sent out. If you do not pay then the debt will be sent on to the Bailiff and you will receive a payment notice in your name.
The debt then continues to increase when the Bailiff charges a fee of another SEK 600.

Have you not paid the back tax?
Have you not yet paid your tax arrears? Then it is time to act immediately.
Either you make the payment via your bank, but then it takes a couple of bank days before the authority can register the payment and you will receive a reminder sent to you.
You can also pay the residual tax via Swish if the amount is at least SEK 10 or at most SEK 40,000. Then the authority receives the money at once and you don’t have to wait for the bank to handle the transfer.
