On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, which are recorded as the largest terrorist attack in US history, the victims were commemorated with ceremonies held in New York, Pennsylvania and the US Department of Defense (Pentagon). US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former US President Donald Trump, vice presidential candidate JD Vance, New York Senator Chuch Schumer and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg were present at the first ceremony at the site of the former World Trade Center.
HARRIS AND TRUMP SHAKE HAND
Before the ceremony began, Harris and Trump, who appeared in the first live debate for the November 5 presidential election last night, greeted each other with a handshake, drawing attention.
The ceremony began with a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the attack, and the names of the victims were read out loud.
After the ceremony in New York, Biden and Harris went to a ceremony in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the last hijacked plane crashed on September 11. Harris and Biden laid a wreath at the memorial near the open field where Flight 93 was shot down by F-16s, and from there they went to the memorial at the Pentagon, where another plane crashed on September 11.
BIDEN WEARS A TRUMP HAT
The moment when Biden wore a Trump hat at the event went viral on social media, with many Trump supporters posting messages such as “Thanks for your support Joe,” while the White House stated that Biden wore the hat to defend bipartisan democracy.
THE ATTACK THAT RESHAPED THE WORLD
On the morning of September 11, New York woke up to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, known as the Twin Towers, the city’s iconic buildings on Manhattan Island.
Following the hijacking of four passenger planes that took off from Newark, Boston and Washington and went to San Francisco and Los Angeles, an American Airlines passenger plane heading to Los Angeles crashed into the north building of the Twin Towers in New York at 08:46 local time.
While the north tower was burning, another hijacked United Airlines plane crashed into the south tower on live television at 09:03, 17 minutes after the first attack. Another hijacked plane crashed into the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) building after the attacks on the Twin Towers.
The last hijacked plane, Flight 93, was shot down by F-16s in rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
As a result of the September 11 attacks, excluding the 19 hijackers who hijacked the planes, a total of 2,977 people lost their lives in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
