Research from the University of Michigan on Samsung watches

University of Michigantested the fitness and wellness metrics on the Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatch. Galaxy WatchThe accuracy of ‘s fitness tracking features, such as heart rate, dehydration, VO2 max, and body fat percentage, were examined through extensive testing with professional runners.

HPSSC’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) found significant correlations between Galaxy Watch and clinical and sports science reference devices’ measurements of heart rate, fluid loss, VO2 max, and body fat percentage.

In research conducted by MiPR, the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features was verified by working with elite runners and tracking the following key metrics:

Heart rate: Heart rate, the most frequently checked metric during workouts, measures how fast your heart beats during physical activity. The findings show a 90 percent correlation between measurements taken with an electrocardiogram (ECG) device during running, the gold standard for measuring heart rate, and measurements taken on the Galaxy Watch.

Fluid loss measurement: Hydration measurement estimates the amount of fluid lost during physical activity and helps guide athletes towards proper hydration after exercise. The study found that Galaxy Watch showed a 95 percent correlation with related measurement equipment in assessing fluid loss over distances ranging from 2.5 kilometers to 20 kilometers.

VO2 max: Understanding how much oxygen the body consumes during exercise helps athletes assess their fitness levels and set the best goals and limits for themselves. The study found an 82 percent correlation between the Samsung Galaxy Watch and clinical-grade diagnostic equipment, indicating acceptable agreement.

Body fat percentage: Measuring body fat percentage provides a better understanding of physical fitness and well-being than when just body weight is tracked. Galaxy Watch’s detections showed a 95 percent correlation with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) results, a standard diagnostic test for body composition that uses low-dose X-rays.
