Lotta and Marcus lives outside Borlänge with Lotta’s nine-year-old son and two cats. It was love at first sight for the couple, who got together after a week and quickly moved in together. Lotta had debts from a previous relationship, while Marcus claimed to be debt-free. But it didn’t take long before letters from debt collection began to trickle down.

After the couple got married, it was revealed that Marcus had not been completely honest. Six months after the wedding, Lotta found out that Marcus had debts of SEK 500,000. Marcus had financed the couple’s lifestyle with borrowed money and had also made unsuccessful car deals behind Lotta’s back, something on which he lost 200,000 kroner.

The truth came out when they were trying to take out a consolidation loan, and it turned out that Marcus had very bad credit. Then Lotta understood that something was wrong. Now Lotta finds it extremely difficult to trust Marcus, at the same time that the couple has around one million kroner in debt, which was put on pure consumption. Large sums of money spent on trips, cars and other things that the couple can’t really afford.

– I was ashamed. You felt that you wanted to do things with the boy. Everyone else could afford to go on trips, then you felt that you wanted to too, says Marcus.

Marcus and Lotta go back 56,000 every month
The budget table shows that the household fund receives 37,800 each month, but large sums of money flow away at the same time. The Other category consists of necessary expenses such as subscriptions and the like, but also of an awful lot of unnecessary expenses. Marcus and Lotta have made a series of purchases at discount department stores, travel and a lot of games. If you add this up, it comes to a staggering 17,000 kroner every month.

The couple has countless credits, unsecured loans, unpaid bills and debt collection – something that costs them SEK 57,800 monthly. This means that Marcus and Lotta lose a total of SEK 56,500 each month.
– I feel very stupid for putting us in this situation. They had wanted to fix it as quickly as possible, says Marcus.
