Anyone who wants to put a PS5 Pro in their living room from November 2024 will have to dig deep into their pockets. According to Sony, the improved PlayStation 5 will cost almost 800 euros. For comparison: the previous model in the Pro series cost only half as much at launch.
The Astro Bot is out of the bag, the PlayStation 5 Pro has finally been officially introduced. I’m not the only one who stumbled upon the price that Sony wants to charge for the improved PS5 in Germany from November 7, 2024.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to cost 799.99 euros. When the PS4 Pro hit stores on November 10, 2016, it cost only half as much, at 399.99 euros. Adjusted for inflation, that would be around 490 euros today, significantly less than the price of the new Pro.
The digital slim version of the PS5 currently costs around 499.99 euros. The standard version with a drive is available for 549.99 euros.
Here is the trailer for the new PS5 Pro:
Luxury device for the living room
If you consider that consoles are supposed to be alternatives for enthusiastic gamers who can’t or don’t want to afford a powerful PC, that’s a hefty price. Even more so if you add to the almost 800 euros the money for one or two games, a second DualSense controller (which became more expensive in stores a few hours ago) and a drive.
As a new PS5 customer, you should expect to spend around 1,000 euros. You can’t get a high-end computer for that these days, but you can get a solid mid-range computer with an RTX 4060 Ti, an Intel Core i5, a sufficiently large SSD and 16 GB RAM. Or a GeForce RTX 4080, without the PC around it – the graphics card prices are still absurd.
Who writes here? Karsten Scholz is actually MeinMMO’s MMORPG expert, but he has also been a fairly early owner of the PlayStation 5 since the end of 2020. In addition, all previous models of Sony’s console found their way into his living room, although the first PlayStation was still in his children’s room. He will almost certainly not be getting the PS5 Pro.
High price = great performance?
The key question now, of course, is whether it’s worth spending the 800 euros on a PS5 Pro. If you have the cash to spare and absolutely want to play as many games as possible with a constant 60 frames per second and improved ray tracing, you’ll go for it.
In that case, you should also have a TV that is high-quality enough to make the graphic difference visible and tangible.
For everyone else, however, I don’t see why you shouldn’t go for the much cheaper PS5 at that price. The current PS5 can already display many blockbuster games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us Part 2 or Demon’s Souls in impressive graphics quality with sufficiently good performance.
In addition, Sony was obviously not able to link the announcement of the PS5 Pro with exciting, new exclusive games that would particularly benefit from the performance of the new console.
