Four years after the release of the PlayStation 5, Sony has just officially unveiled its next console: the PS5 Pro. Here’s everything you need to know about the future living room star that will arrive before the holidays.
After having given the PlayStation 5 a nice slimming treatment by releasing the PS5 Slim – a lighter and smaller version of the standard – on November 24, 2023, Sony is once again relaunching the hype around its console. For the 30e anniversary of the release of the brand’s very first home console (December 3, 1994), the Japanese unveiled its new version during a nine-minute presentation, which officially becomes the most powerful console on the market – a title previously held by the Xbox Series X. An announcement eagerly awaited!
PS5 Pro: the most powerful console ever created
The PS5 Pro generally takes up the design of the PS5 Slim, with a few more stripes on the top plate. However, it is announced to be 45% faster, in particular thanks to its new “engine”. As with the first-generation PS5, Sony has chosen AMD to equip its console, but with a system offering much more power. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a Ryzen type in Zen 2 architecture running at 3.5 GHz with a boost of 3.85 GHz, while the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) goes from 10.3 to 33.5 TFLOPS. This set is associated with 16 GB of system memory, of which 13.7 GB is available for games, with a bandwidth of 576 GB/s, 2 TB of SSD storage and Wi-Fi 7. The height of luxury!
The PS5 Pro’s animations are much smoother thanks to improved ray tracing management and PSSR technology (for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling), the equivalent of DLSS on PS5 or Nvidia’s DLSS. Thanks to artificial intelligence! Thus, the console will allow its users to boost the number of FPS (frames per second displayed on the screen). No need to choose between Fidelity and Performance modes, the PS5 Pro will offer the best of both modes! With these new performances, Sony should seriously get closer to native 4K with a framerate of 60 fps.
Be aware that developers will need to do some optimization work to ensure that the PS5 Pro is used to its full potential. Some of the games that will benefit from these improvements include: Hogwarts Legacy – Hogwarts has never been so beautiful! –, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Horzon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part 2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart or even Assassin’s Creed Shadowsscheduled for November 12.
But better performance also means an increase in the sale price. The new console will be sold with a classic DualSense controller for 800 euros, or 250 euros more than the standard version! And that’s without the disc player, the latter being sold separately for 120 euros. That’s not within everyone’s reach! The PS5 Pro will be available from November 7, 2024. Just in time for the holiday season! Pre-orders will open on Thursday, September 26 at specialist retailers and in physical stores.
