Truls Möregårdh’s grief when his friend David got cancer

Life is playing for double Olympic silver medalist Truls Möregårdh. But it hasn’t always been a bed of roses for the 22-year-old.
In the “Framgångspodden” he talks about the worst period in his life.

– I still played good table tennis, but in life it was hard, he says.

Before the Olympic Games in Paris last summer, not many people believed that Truls Möregårdh would leave with two silver medals and also win the love of an entire country. With his dazzling game and his wonderful energy, he made sure to put Sweden back on the ping-pong map – it was like watching Jan-Ove Waldner, Mikael Appelgren and Jorgen Persson again.

There is now “Truls fever” throughout the country. Children and young people in schools and on leisure farms all dream of becoming the next Truls Möregårdh. Interest has really increased during the summer.

Truls Möregårdh’s worst time

For those who have recently discovered the energy bundle Truls, it may seem that he is always just as exuberantly happy. But of course he has also had heavier periods in his life. In the “Framgångspodden” with Alexander Pärleros tells the ball wizard about the heaviest period of his life.

– When have you felt the absolute worst?, asks Pärleros.

– Oh, it was a difficult period for a while when one of my best friends, David his name, got cancer. We were 16. I was 15 I think – or he was 17 and I was 16. He got leukemia out of nowhere really. He played tournaments a week before and even won. He was super talented really and we were going to the youth EC and everything. All of a sudden, life changed completely for David, says Truls in the podcast.

Möregårdh is an ambassador for Ung Cancer

It took a toll on everyone involved when they received the tragic news that David had leukemia. He was a well-known person in the area.

– We are all very close in the club, in Eslöv, it is a family club. His father is my trainer that I have had for as long as possible. Everyone who works at the club is related to David. The whole club was affected and at the same time we had some problems with another coach. It was a difficult period in life. That’s probably when it’s heaviest, says Truls.

Many would probably think that he would choose a sports memorabilia. But because Möregårdh is a wise young man, he knows that life is so much more than just ping-pong.

– I could sit and rabble up painful ping-pong memories, but somehow that’s beside the point of my life. Because there are so many other things in life that are so important. It’s something that took a toll on me. I still played good table tennis, but in life it was heavy. He had a very hard time there and struggled, he says in the podcast.

Only a week after he received the heavy news, Truls became an ambassador for “Young Cancer”. Something he still is. He also acquired a “Fuck Cancer” bracelet which he still wears.

His friend David plays in the top table tennis league in Sweden.

You are so strong and brave to tell about this, Truls. You’ve come out stronger from it.
