Since its launch in 2017 and for years, fans have passionately followed the adventures of Doctor Shaun Murphy and his colleagues at St. Bonaventure Hospital in The Good Doctor. A final season that turns out to be particularly emotionally intense, since the writers of The Good Doctor have chosen to make a key character of the series disappear, in a tragic way. Spoiler alert: it is Doctor Aaron Glassman, mentor and father figure of Shaun, magnificently played by Richard Schiff since the first episode. In episode 5 of this 7th and very last season of The Good DoctorGlassman tells Shaun that his cancer has returned and that he is terminally ill. This is devastating news for Shaun.
“It’s a terrible shock for Shaun,” Freddie Highmore told reporters on the sidelines of the broadcast of The Good Doctor season 7. “Glassman is the one who always supported him, who believed in him when no one else did. Losing him is going to be an immense ordeal.” The scenes between Shaun and Glassman are therefore more than poignant, as the young surgeon will have to accept letting go of the one he considers a father. “We shot very moving sequences with heartbreaking goodbyes,” Richard Schiff also revealed.
A tragic death, a terrible drama
But Glassman’s death isn’t the only drama that befalls Shaun in the final season of The Good Doctor. Her friend and former colleague Claire, played by Antonia Thomas, returns after several seasons of absence. But it is as a patient that she returns, revealing that she has breast cancer. “It’s a new blow for Shaun to see someone he loves so much suffer,” explained Freddie Highmore. “He will do everything to save her.” Unfortunately, despite the experimental treatment that Shaun puts in place, Claire will lose her arm in this season, even if her life will be saved.
In the face of these terrible ordeals, Shaun can count on the unwavering support of his wife Lea and their children. “That’s what allows him to hold on, to continue to move forward despite the grief,” says Paige Spara, who has played Lea since the beginning. The last episodes show how Shaun manages to overcome these dramas, in particular by creating a foundation in Glassman’s name to help doctors with autism spectrum disorders like him.
The end of The Good Doctorwhich aired in May 2024 in the United States, jumps back in time several years. We discover a fulfilled Shaun, now chief of surgery, surrounded by his family and friends. “It was important for us to show that despite the challenges, life goes on and that we can find happiness,” confided David Shore, the creator of the series. “We wanted an ending that was full of hope.” The final shot, which shows Shaun leaving the hospital with Lea and their children, is a beautiful homage to the very first episode.
For fans, seeing the series end is bound to be heartbreaking, especially with the tragic events of this final season. But as Freddie Highmore pointed out, “we can be proud of how far we’ve come and everything this series has brought us over seven years.” On television, the final episodes of The Good Doctor were scheduled from September 11, 2024 on TF1, before their arrival on Netflix.

Why did Antonia Thomas (Claire) leave the series?
