In Pello in Western Lapland, there was an accident on Saturday in an all-man class car race, in which one person was injured after the car caught fire, says Lapland’s rescue service.

Two cars crashed during a race, when one of the cars rolled onto its roof and caught fire. The driver was able to get out of the burning car on his own, but also caught fire himself. The officials of the competition extinguished the person and the car, the release states.

Due to the competition, an ambulance was already there, and the injured driver was immediately treated on the spot, said the fire marshal on duty Timo Nyholm From the rescue service of Lapland to STT. Nyholm also praises the performance of the competition staff in the situation.

The injured driver was taken to the hospital by a medical helicopter, which was called to the scene from Oulu. The first aid also checked the other driver who was involved in the crash, who nevertheless survived the situation without injuries, Nyholm says.

It was an everyman class competition held at the Kittisvaara motor track.

Competition director Teuvo Juuso tells STT that the accident happened in the A-final in the competition series for rear-engined cars.

Juuso says that an ambulance and a rescue unit are always on hand in every man’s competitions in case of dangerous situations. According to him, their help is needed every now and then.

The competition held in Pello is organized by Ylitornion Urheiluautoilijat. According to Juuso, there has not been a single serious dangerous situation in the competitions organized by the club before.

The rescue service was notified of the accident at half past three in the afternoon. In addition to the medical helicopter, two rescue units from Pello and two first aid units were called to the scene.

Even though the helicopter arrived, the medical staff made the decision to take the driver by ambulance for further treatment.
