A Pakistani man living in Canada is suspected of planning a mass shooting at a Jewish gathering place on October 7 – the anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel.

The 20-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday while on his way to New York – with the stated goal of killing as many Jews as possible, according to US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The 20-year-old is accused of having tried to give support to the terrorist group IS, because according to his own information he planned to carry out the act in the group’s name.

“This planned anti-Semitic attack on Jewish people in the United States is appalling. There is no place for such ideologies and hate crimes in Canada,” said Michael Duheme of the Canadian Police, in a statement.

According to US authorities, the man began sharing IS propaganda on social media and in conversations with others online last November. In a conversation with two police officers who had infiltrated the environment, the man said he was considering either carrying out the attack on October 7 or October 11, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
