“Humans don’t need AI to type crazy things”
What was he asked? In an interview with the English magazine “The Verge”, Gates was asked how he feels about generative AI misinformation and the climate. The discussion also touched on the collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in which Microsoft has already invested a lot of money.
Specifically, the question was how Gates would feel “if generative AI tools that Microsoft has been working on had a significant impact on disinformation, on things like climate change and global health?”
Bill Gates replied: The Microsoft founder then explained:
I think that AI, by and large, is very beneficial for climate work. People can type misinformation into a word processor. They don’t need AI to type crazy things. So I’m not sure that AI, other than creating fakes, really changes the balance.
I would even say that the role of AI in reducing misinformation can play a positive role in terms of being able to see what’s going on in a super efficient way.
AI would make mistakes and spread false information, but humans could do that just as well. AI is also much more efficient at detecting and reducing errors than humans ever could. Bill Gates adds:
Misinformation is where I believe the younger generation needs to find the balance between free speech and misinforming people.
