More than 2,200 tourists got stuck on Friday at a facility on a Swiss mountain.

After torrential downpours hit parts of Switzerland this week, mudslides destroyed the only road up to the facility in Saas-Fee, northeast of the Matterhorn.

The road will not be passable for several days and the authorities were forced to fly the tourists out by helicopter.

Television images show long queues of people dressed for mountain walks. However, the atmosphere is said to have been good and several of those affected took advantage of the situation and socialized over one or a few glasses of beer.
