Even though the major Internet and telephone operators are going through a very difficult period, marked by rising energy costs and inflation, Orange recently gave its customers a nice gift! On the occasion of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the operator decided to offer access to 5G to all 4G subscribers, without additional cost or need to change their mobile plan. A gift that concerned all holders of an Orange subscription, but also of Sosh, its low-cost formula. A golden opportunity for all the operator’s customers who have not yet taken the plunge and who have not yet been able to test the gain in speed and stability offered by the 5G connection.
To take advantage of it, you only needed to have a 5G-compatible smartphone, which are generally all mid-range or high-end phones marketed after 2021. However, this offer did not concern virtual mobile network operators (MVNOs) who rent their access to Orange’s infrastructure. But while the offer was supposed to end this Sunday, September 8, at the end of the Paralympic Games, the operator finally announced good news.
Orange still offers 5G until the end of September
In a statement addressed to Numeramathis Friday, September 6, a spokesperson for the company revealed that the free 5G offer for all 4G subscribers has been extended until the end of the month. “Orange and Sosh customers, who currently benefit from free access to 5G, will continue to benefit from it until the end of September”the source said. Affected customers should receive a text message on September 24 to warn them that the operation will end a few days later. Subscribers who have signed up for a 4G plan will automatically switch back to the old-generation network without any manipulation to be carried out.
If Orange gave such a gift to its subscribers, it was above all to relieve traffic congestion on the network during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The operator also broke several records during the summer of 2024, including indicating that more than 80,000 terabytes of data were downloaded. But that’s not all! Orange also recorded a traffic record during swimmer Léon Marchand’s two 200-meter finals. The network reportedly reached 1.86 terabits per second, more than during the semi-final between France and Spain at Euro 2024.
