Burping is completely normal, but if it happens too often during the day, it can become annoying. How can this phenomenon be explained? A study sheds light on the causes.
Whether it’s after a big meal or after drinking a soft drink, burping is completely natural. But some people have burps throughout the day, which bother them. To better understand this phenomenon, a study was conducted by Japanese researchers, led by Professor Yasuhiro Fujiwara of Osaka Metropolitan University. Their work is published in the journal American Journal of Gastroenterology.
A phenomenon more common in men
The scientists gathered a cohort of 10,000 adults, who were asked to take part in an online survey. In total, 1.5% of the respondents, or 151 volunteers, admitted to suffering from excessive burping.
The most affected people are men, people who drink alcohol and patients suffering from gastrointestinal pathology or undergoing anti-reflux treatment to relieve heartburn or heartburn.
What are the disorders associated with belching?
In parallel with this initial observation, researchers have revealed various disorders associated with burping, including the presence of:
In addition to these various disorders, simply chewing food too much or not enough was also associated with more frequent belching. On the other hand, drinking carbonated drinks was not found to be a factor in causing more burping. Finally, it was found that eating well systematically until satiety allowed for less burping.
If, like these volunteers, you also suffer from frequent belching, it is possible to find relief. To do this, scientists recommend following hygiene and dietary rules, including taking the time to chew your food, but not too much, avoiding alcohol, fizzy drinks and chewing gum, and consulting a doctor to detect a possible pathology explaining the phenomenon.
Finally, know that burping untimely can be a reflection of stress. For this, it is important to adopt relaxation techniques to also reduce the number of burps per day.The problem with belching is that its treatment takes a long time and is only performed in a limited number of medical institutions.” explains Yasuhiro Fujiwara.
“In the future, assessing the number of times a person chews and improving certain eating habits in patients with belching disorders will be a treatment option.” he concludes.
